WHY WRITING ABOUT YOUR PAIN CAN HELP I realized many years ago that the process that begins with a diagnosis in the office needed to continue and be reinforced at home to be even more effective. I advised patients to go home and keep a daily journal of feelings and emotions. Some did great with this advice. Others found it hard to sustain the effort of writing in a blank notebook after a few days or perhaps a week. So I wrote The MindBody Workbook which is a guided journal that offers the reader daily questions (typically four) and a space for their answers. Over the course of the 30 days of the workbook, people are asked questions that cover a variety of areas in their life (family, work, financial, childhood). The questions probe more deeply each week. I encourage people to keep writing, if not daily, at least two to three times per week, after the 30 day workbook is completed. The style of writing is a free flowing, open association of events with feelings and feelings with earlier experiences. You can begin this tonight if you are ready. Don’t worry about punctuation, spelling, or too much about neatness. Look at it as a private journal that you may re-read, but that no one else is supposed to read without your permission. I heard from a patient that some folks on the internet were referring to the MindBody Workbook as the ‘dreaded workbook’. I think the dread that some people feel as they approach journaling about their life and their pain is the fear of opening up. For others, it’s the discomfort at looking inside. Still others find the discipline of taking time out daily to write for 10-20 minutes to be difficult in their busy, chaotic lives. But overall, I am sort of honored that the workbook is not a “fluff” and that it requires some effort. I find that just about everything in life that is worthwhile requires some effort... and maybe a little dread at times. Daily journaling can help reinforce a psychological thinking style and help you to gain psychological insight. I find that learning to make this a regular part of one’s thinking process occurs with daily or regular journaling about feelings and fears. It's important to write down your answers or record them on your smartphone or if your ebook reader allows extensive annotation, that may work as well. While reading the introductory section and even the questions is helpful, best results are clearly obtained with the process of writing or speaking the answers and saving them in some recorded form.

Here’s a drug-free, side effect–free solution to common stress and mood problems—developed by two physicians. Millions of Americans suffer from mood problems and stress-related issues including anxiety, depression, insomnia, and trauma-induced emotions and behaviors; and most would prefer not to take medication for their conditions due to troublesome side effects, withdrawal symptoms, and disappointing success rates. Drs. Richard P. Brown and Patricia L. Gerbarg provide a drug-free alternative that works through a range of simple breathing techniques drawn from yoga, Buddhist meditation, the Chinese practice of qigong, Orthodox Christian monks, and other sources. These methods have been scientifically shown to be effective in alleviating specific stress and mood challenges such as anxiety, insomnia, post-traumatic stress disorder, and many others. The authors explain how breathing practices activate communication pathways between the mind and the body, positively impacting the brain and calming the stress response.

The book that will change the way we think about health and illness, The Divided Mind is the crowning achievement of Dr. John Sarno's distinguished career as a groundbreaking medical pioneer, going beyond pain to address the entire spectrum of psychosomatic (mindbody) disorders. The interaction between the generally reasonable, rational, ethical, moral conscious mind and the repressed feelings of emotional pain, hurt, sadness, and anger characteristic of the unconscious mind appears to be the basis for mindbody disorders. The Divided Mind traces the history of psychosomatic medicine, including Freud's crucial role, and describes the psychology responsible for the broad range of psychosomatic illness. The failure of medicine's practitioners to recognize and appropriately treat mindbody disorders has produced public healthy and economic problems of major proportions in the western world. One of the most important aspects of psychosomatic phenomena is that knowledge and awareness of the process clearly have healing powers. The Divided Mind reveals how and why thousands of people have become pain-free by following Dr. Sarno's revolutionary advice.

Much of the chronic and recurrent pain and discomfort that we all experience is psychologically induced. This psychologically induced pain is called TMS, or The Mindbody Syndrome. TMS most commonly affects the back, neck, and legs, but can affect any part of the body or organ system. Some common TMS disorders include headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, dyspepsia, gastroesophageal reflux disorder, carpal tunnel syndrome, plantar fasciitis, temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ), and fibromyalgia. Using today’s popular lingo, TMS is a mindbody disorder – the symptoms arise from the mind and are experienced by the body. Thus, The Mindbody Syndrome is an appropriate title. With the information in this book, I am optimistic that you will be able to eliminate your pain, no matter where it is. You will do this with knowledge. Simply by changing how you think about the connection between your brain and body, you will begin to feel better. I will not be recommending oral medication, special exercises, surgery, injections, physical therapy, chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture, massage therapy or any other of the multitude of alternative therapies that have sprung up in an effort to combat the explosion of chronic and recurrent pain in our society. Just knowledge.

The solution for chronic inflammation, regarded as the cause of most common modern diseases, has been identified! And it is not blueberries. It is something right beneath our feet-the Earth itself!Throughout most of evolution humans walked barefoot and slept on the ground, largely oblivious that the surface of the Earth contains limitless healing energy. Science has discovered this energy as free-flowing electrons constantly replenished by solar radiation and lightning. Few people know it, but the ground provides a subtle electric signal that maintains health and governs the intricate mechanisms that make our bodies work-just like plugging a lamp into a power socket makes it light up. Modern lifestyle, including the widespread use of insulative rubber or plastic-soled shoes, has disconnected us from this energy and, of course, we no longer sleep on the ground as we did in times past.Earthing introduces the planet's powerful, amazing, and overlooked natural healing energy and how people anywhere can readily connect to it. This eye-opening book describes how the physical disconnect with the Earth creates abnormal physiology and contributes to inflammation, pain, fatigue, stress, and poor sleep. By reconnecting to the Earth, symptoms are rapidly relieved and even eliminated and recovery from surgery, injury, and athletic overexertion is accelerated. This never-before-told story-filled with fascinating research and real-life testimonials- chronicles a discovery with the potential to create a global health revolution.

Nick Ortner, founder of the Tapping World Summit and best-selling filmmaker of The Tapping Solution, is at the forefront of a new healing movement. In his upcoming book, The Tapping Solution, he gives readers everything they need to successfully start using the powerful practice of tapping – or Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT). Tapping is one of the fastest and easiest ways to address both the emotional and physical problems that tend to hamper our lives. Using the energy meridians of the body, practitioners tap on specific points while focusing on particular negative emotions or physical sensations. The tapping helps calm the nervous system to restore the balance of energy in the body, and in turn rewire the brain to respond in healthy ways. This kind of conditioning can help rid practitioners of everything from chronic pain to phobias to addictions. Because of tapping’s proven success in healing such a variety of problems, Ortner recommends to try it on any challenging issue. In The Tapping Solution, Ortner describes not only the history and science of tapping but also the practical applications. In a friendly voice, he lays out easy-to-use practices, diagrams, and worksheets that will teach readers, step-by-step, how to tap on a variety of issues. With chapters covering everything from the alleviation of pain to the encouragement of weight loss to fostering better relationships, Ortner opens readers’ eyes to just how powerful this practice can be. Throughout the book, readers will see real-life stories of healing ranging from easing the pain of fibromyalgia to overcoming a fear of flying. The simple strategies Ortner outlines will help readers release their fears and clear the limiting beliefs that hold them back from creating the life they want.
